Night 1 - Johannesburg

On arrival at OR Thambo Airport (Jhb) you will be met by a representative who will transfer you to The Safari Club, which is located relatively close by. Accommodation has been booked for you at the Safari Club for 1 night.

The concept behind Safari Club SA is to offer personal service to all clients. Every room is carefully decorated to a specific area e.g. Kalahari room, Etosha room, Okavango room etc.

Night 2: Khama Rhino Sanctuary – Serowe, Botswana

This morning your guide will collect you from the airport or hotel, from where you will commence with your trek north-west to reach Khama Rhino Sanctuary in the mid-afternoon (8 hours driving). Over night accommodation has been booked for you for 1 night.

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhino, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Batswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources

Nights 3 & 4: Central Kalahari – Haina Safari Lodge

This morning your guide will give you an early wake-up call, in order for you to start your safari into the red sand dunes of the Kalahari. Your next stop is Haina Safari Lodge in Deception Valley, your tented home for the next 2 nights.

The setting of Haina Safari Lodge is classically African, relaxed and informal. The Main Boma consists of a lounge, dining room and bar area decorated in wood and thatch. A swimming pool, sun deck, well-appointed bar and an expansive boma eating area are among the facilities available to visitors. The sundeck is a popular spot for social activities and for exchanging accounts of the various sightings of birds and animals seen during the day. The Lodge accommodates up to 20 guests in tented accommodation which are all private with their own decks.

Day 3: The road to Haina Safari Lodge is long and sandy, thus it take most of the day to make your way to the lodge. En-route you may encounter animals dwelling this arid region and the scenery will make for great panoramic photographs. On arrival you will check in, freshen up and relax on the viewing deck or time permitting you will go for an afternoon game drive.

Day 4: Today you will visit a San community where you can interact with the local people. In the afternoon you go on a game drive through the Kalahari.

Nights 5, 6 & 7: Moremi & Okavango Delta – Mankwe Safari Lodge

Your personal guide will meet you at the Maun airport in Botswana. After assisting you with your luggage you will travel to Mankwe Lodge, where accommodation has been booked for you for 3 nights. (1 night on Mboma Island)

Deep in the African wilderness, Mankwe Bush Lodge sits amidst a landscape that will provide you with the true sense of southern Africa. Positioned on a slight incline within a forest area, you have a perfect view of the local mopani bush stretched out in front of you. After a long day spent viewing game, the lodge offers poolside relaxation or a refreshing drink at the bar. And as evening falls, drinks are served in a hide overlooking a waterhole, from where you are likely to see some of the many wildlife species in the area.

Day 5: After check in you will have time to freshen up before you depart of an afternoon game safari. In the evening you will enjoy a good dinner and have the opportunity to talk to the rangers about their experiences in Africa. Back in you room will fall asleep with the sounds of the bush in the background.

From Haina to Mankwe will take you approximately 4 hours. See if you cannot do a last morning game drive at Haina before departure to Mankwe.

Guests arrive at Mankwe Bush Lodge for a self drive, fully catered no activities stay. Night drive booked. CASH BAR.

Day 6: On the second day of your visit to Moremi you will have a sleep out on a Delta Island. Mboma is a pristine island in the heart of the Moremi. You will simply climb on the boat and be taken to your mobile camp with beds, mattresses and linen. The overnight accommodation is fully catered, with bucket showers and field toilets. The boat and guide stay with you at all times. This experience will give you an appreciation for the simple pleasures of doing a real safari. In the Delta your time will be spent doing boat based game viewing in a mokoro with a poler.

An early breakfast will be served so that our guests can get a head start for a full day game drive into the Moremi National Park. Our experienced guide and safari vehicle will take them through South Gate and sightings may include lion, leopard, buffalo and packs of wild dog. The reserve is also home to plains of zebra and a variety of buck, including the red lechwe. A picnic lunch and cool box will be pre-packed by the camp’s chef.

At Mboma Boat station guests will enjoy a two hour Mokoro excursion and then board a motorboat for the Island.

Day 7: You will head back to Mankwe Bush lodge after breakfast. Along the way you will have another chace to see more of the wildlife of the Moremi. Back at the Lodge you will check into your rooms again and afterwards you can just relax and take in the spectacular views of Botswana..

Nights 8 & 9: Makgadikgadi Pans – Planet Baobab

Today you will depart from Moremi and venture to another exciting destination – Makgadikgadi Pans. A Bakalanga Hut has been booked for you for 2 nights.

The Makgadikgadi Pans are indescribably vast. These ancient salt lake pans, stretch as far as the eye can see and are bordered with grasslands hosting herds of wildlife. Welcome to the Baobab capital of the world and home of the Kalahari Surf Club!The average age of each tree; 4000 years and beyond, the boundless salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, a lunar landscape the size of Switzerland.Thankfully, the funkiest bar and the coolest pool in the Kalahari await your pleasure. Planet Baobab is a well known watering hole for travellers of every description and the more colourful characters from Maun. At any one time, locals jostle the cross-continentals who have slogged it through the bush, and worse, to get here. Just a stone's throw from all this beer and bustle is the elephant's paddling pool. Oblivious to Guests crouching in the nearby trees, the elephants and travellers mostly ignore each other. At Planet Baobab, you can sleep in traditionally styled Bakalanga huts with en suite showers, curl up in a Baobab hut which share the best ablution blocks you'll ever see or pitch your tent, or park your 4 x 4. Day 8: The trek to Makgadikgadi is a long one. Most of the day will be spent driving to Makgadikgadi Pans, but once you arrive, you will understand why so many people take the effort to drive to this destination. After checking in, you will have the rest of the day at leisure to relax by the pool of enjoy drinks at the local pub. Day 9 : In the morning your guide will pack the vehicle and take you on a full day expedition to the Pans. This moon landscape will take you breath away.

Nights 10 & 11:– Chobe– Chobe Safari Lodge

Today you will travel to Kasane in northern Botswana. Accommodation has been reserved for you for 2 nights at Chobe Safari Lodge.
Chobe Safari Lodge is situated in Kasane on the banks of Chobe River and sharing a border with Chobe National Park. Right on our doorstep four African countries meet ( Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia), Chobe Safari Lodge therefore offers an excellent getaway location to Chobe, Victoria Falls or Caprivi.

The Chobe region is home to the largest population of wild elephant in the world. This is estimated to be approximately 120,000 individuals. Their sometimes daily passage takes them from Zimbabwe through the Chobe and on into Namibia before returning.

Day 10: On arrival at Chobe Safari Lodge you will have the afternoon at leisure. Day 11 :Today you will go on a morning game experience with a twist – game view by boat. Being on a boat allows you to get very close to animals – be sure to encounter elephant and antelope on the river banks and hippo’s and croc’s in the river. In the afternoon when the sun’s heat has subsided you will go on an afternoon game drive in Chobe National Park. In the evening you will relax at the lodge.

Nights 12 : Livingstone – Zambezi Sun Hotel

Day 12: This morning you will say good bye to your guide before your transfer to Livingstone. The drive between Kasane and Livingstone is not far, but you need to go through the border crossing and take the ferry to get to Zambia. The whole experience is very interesting and should; not take too long. On arrival in Livingstone you will make your way to Zambezi Sun, located a stone’s through from the Falls. Vic Falls is the adventure capital of Africa so it should not be difficult to find an activity that you want to do. Alternatively you can relax at the Hotel’s pool. The Hotel offers guest free access to the Falls, via a footpath that runs along the river. You will thus have ample opportunity to visit the Falls during your stay in Livingstone. The Hotel offers an Activity Desk where you can book a range of adrenalin activities (for your own account).

Day 13 - DepartureAll too soon your safari in Africa will reach its end. You will be transferred to Livingstone Airport, from where you will fly back to Johannesburg in South Africa. Your heart will be filled with many good memories of this adventure, and you will be anxious to get home to show your families & friends your stunning photographs and tell them your stories of Africa.

3 nights Moremi Game Reserve

The world renowned Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve is one of the most spectacular and wild places to visit. From mighty herds of Elephant, numbering in their 100’s to Lions on the prowl, this is a wildlife haven that everyone needs to visit at least once in a life time Your days will be spent doing 4x4 Game Drives and Bush Walks. Most of the game driving will be done in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and in the Kwai River area which is renowned for its excellent game viewing. You will also have the option of visiting the Okavango Delta region in Moremi.

Day 1: Moremi – The start of a Safari Adventure (D)

Your Guide will meet you at the Maun Airport from where you will depart for your Safari. Before departure you will have a last chance to do some shopping and sending e-mails. The drive is approximately two hours to the lodge and the first day will be spent relaxing at the Safari lodge. You will experience the first true sense of wilderness at night with all the night sounds and endless skies.

Day 2: Moremi – Kwai River Region and the Okavango Delta (B,L,D)

The day will start bright and early with a good breakfast and after packing the car with all you camera equipment you will be off for a full day of game viewing and excitement. This is big game country and you may encounter elephant, lion and leopard amongst many other species of wildlife. Lunch will take the form of a picnic under one of the age old trees in the bush. In the afternoon we will explore the channels of the Okavango Delta and experience the spectacular beauty and rich birdlife of the Delta. By late afternoon we will head back to the lodge for and relaxing evening, chatting about the sights of the day and watching the moon trod across the night sky.

Day 3: Moremi - Wilderness Experience of a different kind (B,L,D)

Today will be a different sort of wilderness experience. After breakfast we will head out on foot to explore the surrounding areas of the lodge and spot many of the not so well known aspects of the Moremi wilderness region. Lunch will be at the lodge and after lunch we will depart for another short game drive. This evening we will go on a night game drive for a chance to spot some of the very elusive nocturnal animals.

2 nights Deception Valley (Central Kalahari Game Reserve)

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is situated in the middle of Botswana and is one of the biggest game reserves on the African continent. This is home to many predators and chances are high to spot some of the big cats. Bird watching fans will also be in their element as there are many species of Bird of Prey. The region is relatively new on the safari circuits and not many visitors venture this way. The days are spent doing 4x4 game drives in a private concession bordering the Central Kalahari Game Reserve renowned for its Big Cat experiences, bird watching and a unique San (Bushman) Cultural experience.

Day 4: Deception Valley and the Central Kalahari (B,L,D)

We will depart soon after breakfast for our next destination, the Central Kalahari. On the way we will stop over in Maun for a bit of shopping and you will have the opportunity to catch up with your e-mail at one of the internet shops in town, or you could just relax. The drive is quite long and we will arrive at Haina Safari Lodge by late afternoon. At the lodge we will be welcomed by cold refreshments and friendly staff. You will have the option to go on a evening game drive or to just relax at the lodge for the rest of the day.

Day 5: Deception Valley a San (Bushman) Encounter (B,L,D)

This morning we will go out on an early morning Game drive, with brunch afterwards. The highlight for the day will be the afternoon activity – Bushman Interaction. The rest of the afternoon will be spent under the clear skies of the Kalahari and for the adventurous we will be doing a night game drive.

Accommodation is in Dome Tents (Camping) in a private concession bordering the Central Kalahari National Park.

2 nights Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pans are indescribably vast. These ancient salt lake pans, stretch as far as the eye can see and are bordered with grasslands hosting herds of wildlife. The Pans, especially Soa Pans, serves as breeding grounds to millions of flamingo’s each year and you may have a chance to experience this spectacle (Seasonal and Weather Permitting). The Safari Camp is approximately 15km from Kubu Island where you will visit the Historical Ruins which was recently been declared as a world heritage site.

Day 6: The Makgadikgadi Pans (B,L,D)

The Makgadikgadi Region is vast and driving to our Safari camp is quite far. We will depart after breakfast and make our way to this magnificent and beautiful place. Along the way we will stop for a picnic lunch and some photo shoots if we see something interesting. The road can be very difficult to navigate during the wet season so we will make our way to camp as quickly as possible. The accommodation is completely different from what you would have experienced so far and we will sleep over in a Safari Camp with dome tents and a communal ablution facility. You will be amazed by the open space in this region and we will have sundowners on the edge of the expanses of Sowa Pans. Night time is truly an amazing experience and if the skies are clear this is one of the best places to visit for stargazing.

Day 7: The Makgadikgadi - Explore Kubu Island (B,L,D)

After breakfast we will do some exploring and take a drive to the historical site of Kubu Island. This area was recently declared a world heritage site and you can view the ruins of an age old trading post. There are also many photo opportunities at Kubu Island and of the many stunted Baobab trees of the site. Along the way we will have a chance to visit one of the cattle posts of the region and to interact with the locals. Lunch will be picnic style, before we visit the pans and explore the local nature on foot. Your guide will prepare a BBQ this evening as you sit mesmerized at the vastness of the skies and the pans.

Accommodation are in Dome Tents (Camping) on the Makgadikgadi Pans or near the edge of the pan.

2 nights Chobe Game Reserve

The Chobe Game Reserve, home to some of the largest herds of Elephant on the planet. Chobe Game Reserve is any nature lovers dream, wildlife, birdlife and nature in abundance. One of the highlights in Chobe is the river or boat based game viewing where you get the chance to get up close to the wildlife. Chobe offers some spectacular photo opportunities and game viewing second to none.

Day 8: Chobe, Home of the Elephant (B,L,D)

Today will be a long drive again as we depart for Chobe soon after breakfast. Along the way we will stop over at the crop fields of Pandamatenga for a picnic lunch before we head on to Chobe. On arrival we will check in at the lodge, freshen up and depart for the village of Kasane for some shopping and the internet.

Day 9: Chobe by Boat and 4x4 (B,L,D)

Today will be game viewing, but with a twist. After breakfast we will head for the waters of the mighty Chobe River and will spend the morning doing game viewing by boat. This is an experience of a lifetime because with the boat we have the chance to get really close to the animals. After the game viewing excitement we will head back to camp for lunch before we depart on another 4x4 game drive in the Chobe Reserve. The Chobe Reserve is home to more than 70 000 African Elephant and we may encounter big herds with more than 100 elephants at a time; a truly magnificent site. This is our last evening together so we will do a special farewell dinner. We will use this occasion to give people the opportunity to talk about their highlights of the safari and to exchange addresses and digital pictures.

Day 1 - 2: Maun: Nxai Mobile Camp

Day 1 – Nxai Pan:

Upon arrival in Maun you will transfer to Nxai Pan National Park. You accommodation will consist of a mobile camp.

The focal point of Nxai Pan is the water hole, situated in the midst of a large grassy plain which is dotted with a few clumps of short umbrella thorn trees. Here, and within the mopane woodland, lion, giraffe, kudu, impala, ostrich, fascinating birdlife and large numbers of springbok, together with a good population of jackal, bat-eared fox and numerous smaller creatures, are permanent residents. Once the rains have started, gemsbok, elephant and zebra migrate to the area. At that time, zebra are present in thousands and drop their young at Nxai Pan, rivalling the spectacle of the multitude of young springbok, to further enhance game-viewing opportunities. Whilst many parks are not considered to be at their best during the rains, Nxai Pan becomes a veritable Garden of Eden during the rainy season.

Day 2 – Nxai Pan:

Today you will explore the Nxai pan area. You will also visit the Baines’ Baobabs. Baines Baobabs, made famous by the explorer / painter Thomas Baine in the last century. These seven enormous Baobab trees are clustered on a small rise next to a dry pan.
The Baines Baobabs have been incorporated into the Nxai Pan National Park to protect the trees for future generations.

Day 3 - 4: Moremi: Mankwe Bush Lodge

Mankwe Bush Lodge are located on the eastern border of the famous Moremi Reserve. Positioned on a slight incline within a forest area that gives a fantastic view of the local mopani bush Mankwe bush lodge offers luxury tented chalets with a rustic look and feel for that true African experience. Each chalet has also been cleverly positioned on an incline facing the setting sun, which makes sitting on your porch at dusk an ideal time to unwind.

There are seven elevated, luxury, tented chalets available, each of which sleeps two. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom, which includes a warm shower and all commodities. A viewing platform on each chalet provides a beautiful setting from which to enjoy sunsets over the bush for as far as the eye can see.

Day 3 - Moremi:

Today you will depart from Nxai Pan and be on your way to Moremi Nationa Park. Here you will overnight at Mankwe Bush Lodge.

Day 4 – Moremi:

After an early breakfast you will start exploring the Moremi Game Reserve. You day will be filled with game viewing in this area famous for its great diversity in fauna and flora.

Day 5 - 6: Moremi: Mboma Boat Station

West of Third Bridge is a large, long island, circled by a loop road which stretches for about 50km around it. There's a spur to this at the north end, and a short cut back to Third Bridge halfway round. It's worth spending a day here, as Mboma's environments are varied and beautiful, though different from the floodplain loops nearer to Xakanaxa. I've had great sightings of cheetah on the northern side of the island, and the south is said to be a popular haunt of buffalo herds.

Day 5 – Okavango Delta:

This morning you will leave for Mboma Boat Station via Moremi Game Reserve. From Mboma you will explore the Okavango Delta flood plains by mokoro for 2 hours. After this wonderful experience you will board a motorboat and travel through the lagoons and channels on your way to the island. Sundowners will be enjoyed while travelling to your destination. Overnight at Mboma mobile camp.

Day 6 – Okavango Delta:

Today you will go on a full day excursion on the Okavango Delta with a motor boat. You will enjoy bird watching and exploring the lagoons and channels. You will also visit the Godikwe heronry breeding Island.

The delta environment has large numbers of animal populations that are otherwise rare, such as crocodile, red lechwe, sitatunga, elephant, wild dogs, buffalo, wattled crane as well as the other more common mammals and bird life

Day 7 - 8: Moremi: Mankwe Bush Lodge

Today you will leave Mboma behind and go back to Mankwe. On your way to Mankwe you will do a game Drive through to Maremi Game Reserve via the North Gate and have a picnic lunch ad Khwai River.

The Khwai River is one of the major rivers of the delta in Botswana, though it occasionally dries up, leaving a few hippo pools to await the fresh waters of the new season.

Day 9: Savute: Savuty / Linyanti Mobile Camp

Leaving Mankwe behind you will be on your way to Chobe National Park. You will explore the Savuti wilderness and overnight in a mobile camp in Savute. Savute is located southern part of the Cobe National park, where a channel, now dry, once brought an annual pulse of water to the dry land. Open spaces, several water-points for animals and palatable grasses however ensure that Savute rewards the visitor with spectacular game-viewing. Lions and hyaenas are particularly plentiful, and their troubled relationship is the subject of the film “Eternal Enemies”, a wildlife classic by Derek and Beverley Joubert. Bird-viewing in the summer months, when rain inundates the marsh, can be especially rewarding.
Linanti lies to the north of Savute along the Linyanti floodplain, at the tail-end of the Chobe River. With beautiful lagoons and river-frontage, this remote and secluded area is rich in bird-life and game, although concentrations cannot rival those of the river.

Day 10: Chobe National Park: Chobe Mobile Camp

After breakfast this morning you will be on your way to the Chobe Riverfront area, famous for it’s big herds of buffalo and elephant. The Chobe National Park, which is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square kilometres, has one of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent. Its uniqueness in the abundance of wildlife and the true African nature of the region, offers a safari experience of a lifetime

A major feature of Chobe National Park is its elephant population. The Chobe elephant comprise part of what is probably the largest surviving continuous elephant population. This population covers most of northern Botswana plus northwestern Zimbabwe. The Botswana's elephant population is currently estimated at around 120,000.

Day 11: Chobe National Park: Chobe Safari Lodge

Situated in the town of Kasane, Chobe Safari Lodge overlooks the perennial and beautiful Chobe River with its Caprivi floodplains. The Lodge boasts a variety of accommodation on offer. There are luxury en-suite River Rooms, the new and highly recommended Safari Rooms, and the thatched, more traditional, rondavels. All accommodation has en-suite bathrooms, while the Safari and River rooms also offering air-conditioning.

Botswana Luxury Tented Safari

Day 1.2.3 MOBILE CAMPING – MOREMI GAME RESERVE

A representative of will meet you upon arrival in Maun, and we have scheduled a light aircraft charter flight to the Moremi Game Reserve. The 20 minute flight gives you the opportunity to view the southern reaches of the Okavango Delta, sightings of elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo are common from the air. It is a short drive to our private camp, game driving en-route.

The supply team travels ahead to set up camp, spacious meru tents with twin beds, fitted with sheets, blankets and warm duvets. The bathroom is ensuite, with a bush bucket shower, and a “long drop” toilet. A fibre-glass base sits over a deep hole, providing a toilet seat and we supply a bucket with ashes and a scoop to maintain a clean environment. Activities consist of game drives in the early mornings and afternoons. We have an early light breakfast, and then head out on our morning activity, returning for a hearty brunch. Then there is a short siesta time, to relax, read about the local wildlife, and your showers are filled with warm water at your request, usually in the afternoon, as the morning breeze can be quite cold. As the midday hours are very hot, most of the animals retreat to the shade and are harder to spot during this time.

After tea we embark on the afternoon game drive. As the sun sets on the African savannah, we enjoy sundowners and head back to camp for dinner. Three course meals are cooked over an open fire and dinner is served either in the marquee tent or under the stars. The evening is spent around the fire listening to the sounds of the wild, discussing the events of the day.

On one day we will have a full day excursion to the Mboma Island Boat Station, here we will depart on Mokoros, the traditional canoes used by the river men to transport reeds and other materials. The mokoro is ideally suited as transport in the delta as in can move quietly through shallow water, being pushed by the boatman using a long pole, moving along the narrow channels or cutting through the long grasses or papyrus. We depart early from camp with a picnic lunch, and enjoy a scenic game drive to the boat station. Here we meet our Delta Guides and set out to explore the southern reaches of the Okavango Delta. We return to the boat station and find a nice shady area to enjoy our picnic lunch, and then slowly return to camp in the late afternoon game driving along the way.

Moremi Game Reserve is completely surrounded by either company owned or community based wildlife management areas. It is accessible by both road and by air with landing strips in both Xakanaxa and Khwai. The road conditions in Moremi vary drastically; the roads can very sandy in places particularly around Xakanaxa and Third Bridge areas during the dry season and in the wet season entire sections of road may be under water. During the rains, in the Mopane woodlands the water puddles in the road, making it practically inaccessible, the end result can be driving in water so deep it flows over the bonnet of a Toyota Land Cruiser!

The reserve enjoys a wide diversity of habitat and is well known for the height of the trees in the mopane tongue, which covers the central area. Birdlife is prolific and varied, ranging from water birds to shy forest dwellers. Elephants are numerous, particularly during the dry season, as well as a range of other wildlife species from buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyaena, jackal and the full range of antelope, large and small, including the red lechwe. Wild dog, whose numbers are so rapidly dwindling elsewhere, are regularly sighted in the Moremi and have been subject to a project being run in the area since 1989 so these animals are often seen wearing collars placed on them by the researchers. It is claimed that the Moremi area contains about thirty percent of all remaining wild dog.

Day 4, 5 & 6 MOBILE CAMPING – SAVUTE AREA - CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, we will depart for Savute, taking a packed lunch for the journey, while the supply team packs up camp.

The Savute area is a prime game viewing destination and covers almost 5,000 square km in the south west of the Chobe National Park. Good sightings of cheetah and leopard are possible and the endangered wild dog also occurs here. Savute is famous for its large concentrations of elephants that congregate around the waterholes at sunset. This makes for exceptional observation of the interaction of Africa’s wildlife. Large secretary birds and kori bustards are often seen strutting around the Savuti marsh and small redbilled francolins provide as a noisy morning wake up call. Interesting summer migrants and water birds include Abdim's storks, carmine bee eaters and even fish eagles. A spectacular sight is the redbilled queleas that gather in their thousands.

The Savute Channel has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere - a mystery that has intrigued geologists and other researchers for many years. The channel dried up in 1885 and started flowing again in 1967 until the end of 1982. Since 1982, the channel has been dry.

The dead Camelthorn (acacia erioloba) trees on the marsh have became one of the most prominent features of the landscape and are the result of drowning. This is closely related to the flooding and drying up of the Savute Channel.

The Magwikhwe sand ridge is 100km long and 20 metres high and is situated on the western edge of Savute. This ridge is the ancient shoreline of a super-lake that covered much of northern Botswana. It is difficult to imagine that this dry landscape was once covered by a huge lake. Watching the sunset on the eastern part of the marsh is an experience remembered by travellers for many years.

We spend 3 nights at Savute before moving on to the Chobe Riverine Area.

Day 7, 8 & 9 MOBILE CAMPING – CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast in camp, it is another travel day, we take a packed lunch for the long day from Savute to the northern boundary of Botswana; the magnificent Chobe River. By staying within the park, we have the advantage of exploring a greater area, as we are not restricted by having to return to the gate each day. At night time, when all the day visitors have departed, we are left alone in our exclusive camp, listening to the sounds of the African bush, as the stars shine brightly overhead.

The Chobe National Park takes its name from the Chobe River, a permanent source of water, which forms the parks natural northern border. The park was established in 1968; the river is the lifeblood of the reserve. Chobe boasts one of the largest elephant populations in Southern Africa. In the dry season, massive herds of elephants are forced to come down to the river and the waterholes to drink. Many other animals are found in the Park including buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe, bushbuck, kudu, waterbuck, impala, puku and lechwe.

Chobe offers a large variety of contrasting vegetation and geological features, changing from Thorntree and Mopane forest into open grassland. Unlike Moremi which is quite flat, the floodplains along the river climb into high ridges, and these fascinating transformations make Chobe an unforgettable stay in Botswana.

Three nights are spent camping and exploring in this rich and fascinating area. Activities include morning and afternoon drives, and one boat cruise on the river. Seeing the park from the river is a magical experience, as you drift along the shores, watching the animals as they come to drink and play. Additional boat excursions can be arranged upon request, but may incur added expense.

Day 10 THE ZAMBEZI SUN HOTEL – Livingstone Zambia

After a hearty breakfast in camp, we return to Kasane, game driving en-route if time permits. We will transfer to a closed bus for the short journey to the Botswana borderpost and then the ferry crossing into Zambia. You will need to have $135 in cash to pay for your visa into Zambia at the border. It is then a drive of approximately an hour to reach the hotel.

Moremi Game Reserve

As part of the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve covers a variety of habitats including permanent swamp, seasonally swamped areas as well as dry land. The fauna and flora of the area differ immensely from the wet swampland to the dry Mopane belts. The best season to visit Moremi is in the dry season, April to October which co-insides with our high season. During this time game is concentrated along the river courses and is easily findable. September and October are the hottest months but are the best for bird watching as this is when the migrant spices arrive and the water birds are breading. All of the big game species are well represented in Moremi; one may even see the illusive rhino’s that were reintroduced to the Reserve in the 1990’s.

Moremi Game Reserve is completely surrounded by either company owned or community based wildlife management areas. It is accessible by both road and by air with landing strips in both Xakanaxa and Khwai. The road conditions in Moremi can vary drastically, the roads can be very sandy in places particularly around Xakanaxa and Third Bridge areas during the dry season and can do a complete 180º in the wet season, with entire sections of road under water, in the Mopane woodlands the water sits on the road and the end result can be driving in water that is flowing over the bonnet of a Toyota Land Cruiser. For this reason in years when Botswana experiences very heavy rain falls, the Government of Botswana may choose to close sections or the entire reserve in the interest of guest safety and the preservation of the roads in the reserve.

When Moremi was first established in 1963 it only covered the dry-land triangle in the southeast. During the 1970’s it was enlarged to include the Chief’s Island area, this area was ancestrally the chief of the Batawana’s hunting grounds. In 1991 the area’s between the Nqoga and the Jao rivers in the north east were added to bring the total area of the reserve its current size of 4 871 km², almost one-third of the Okavango Delta.

Moremi Game Reserve is unique in Africa, it is to date the only game reserve created by an African tribe of their own free will in their own territory.

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is the third largest game reserve / national park in Botswana covering a total 10 698 km². The entire park except for the Chobe River front is buffered by wildlife area’s, this allows for the free movement of game in and out of the park. The Chobe National Park derives its name from the Chobe River that forms its northern border, this river has its source in the highlands of Angola the river in Angola is called the Kuando River but changes where it enters Botswana at Ngoma and takes a dramatic 90º change in direction.

As with Moremi Game Reserve the best time to visit Chobe National Park is in the dry season, at this time the massive herds of elephants are forced to come down to the river and the waterholes to drink added to the elephant the buffalo herds seem to multiply before your eyes and the rare Roan antelope can be seen in massive herds.

Chobe offers a large variety of contrasting vegetation and geological features, the change from Thorntree to Mopane into grassland and back again and the change from river fronted plain to the high ridges that border the river are fluid and so subtle, that one minute you are driving though trees and the next you are on a grass plain almost as if by magic, it is these fascinating changes make Chobe a worthwhile stay in Botswana. Chobe boasts the largest elephant populations in Southern Africa and is the part time base of the Conservation International Elephant Research Project. Chobe National Park was established in 1968, after nearly 30 years a dream in the hearts of some officials in the then Bechuanaland government.

The first steps toward its current status was its proclamation as a reserve in 1961, in the 1980’s Chobe under went a massive boom in tourism and the park could not handle the high numbers of visitors as both the roads and campsites where designed to the necessities of the 1960’s when they where constructed. Botswana’s current tourism policy that is now in effect throughout all the parks an reserves in Botswana was implemented in December 1990 this policy controls the number of visitors to an area with a High Income – Low Impact policy, meaning that firstly the number of visitors to the parks an reserves are monitored very closely and secondly that the visitors that are allowed in pay in comparison to other parks fees in neighboring countries what is considered very high fees. It is this policy that ensures the people that are privileged enough to enter the parks appreciate their stay more and it also ensures that the parks are kept in pristine condition.

Camp Dizhana Accommodation:

7 en-suite safari tents (4mt x 4mt x 2.5 high) each situated on their own private deck over looking the river. Guests sleep on comfortable twin or double beds with duvets and mosquito nets. Each tent has bedside tables, clothes rack as well as tea and coffee making facilities.

Bathrooms consist of flush toilets and hot and cold water showers. The camps power supply is solar power for heating water and gas, paraffin and camp fires for lighting and cooking.

Activities:

Situated on the Khwai River, which has the reputation of being one of the best game viewing areas in Botswana, the river extends from the Okavango River and forms part of the Northern border of Moremi Game Reserve. The camp is on 10 ha with traversing rights across a concession of 40,000 ha.

Game viewing is really concentrated along the river with a wide variety of animals regularly seen which include: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, serval, cheetah, hippo and the wild dog. Birding is superb with large amounts of raptors frequenting the area.

Activities include guided game drives and walks lasting normally around 3 to 4 hours. Drives and walks take place in the early morning and around 15h00, night drives are also offered which gives one the opportunity to view the nocturnal species.
Game viewing from a boat is offered on the Xakanaka Lagoon, this is an hour road trip by vehicle to reach the Bombo Boat Station, and these trips include a picnic lunch.

Camping/ Self Drives

Guests will be responsible to bring their own tents and other accommodation.

Chobe National Park

The Chobe National Park, which is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square kilometres, has one of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent. Its uniqueness in the abundance of wildlife and the true African nature of the region, offers a safari experience of a lifetime.

The park is divided into four distinctly different eco systems: Serondela with its lush plains and dense forests in the Chobe River area in the extreme north-east; the Savuti Marsh in the west about fifty kilometres north of Mababe gate; the Linyanti Swamps in the north-west and the hot dry hinterland in between.

Four-wheel drive vehicles are essential, especially if the intention is to travel extensively into the park - deep sand in some areas tests the skill of the driver and the capabilities of the vehicle. However, most rewarding game viewing awaits.

The original inhabitants of what is now the park were the San people, otherwise known in Botswana as the Basarwa. They were hunter-gatherers who lived by moving from one area to another in search of water, wild fruits and wild animals. The San were later joined by groups of the Basubiya people and later still, around 1911, by a group of Batawana led by Sekgoma. When the country was divided into various land tenure systems, late last century and early this century, the larger part of the area that is now the national park was classified as crown land. In 1931 the idea of creating a national park in the area was first mooted, in order to protect the wildlife from extinction and to attract visitors.

In 1932, an area of some 24,000 square kilometres in the Chobe district was declared a non-hunting area and the following year, the protected area was increased to 31,600 square kilometres. However, heavy tsetse fly infestations resulted in the whole idea lapsing in 1943. In 1957, the idea of a national park was raised again when an area of about 21,000 square kilometres was proposed as a game reserve and eventually a reduced area was gazetted in 1960 as Chobe Game Reserve. Later, in 1967, the reserve was declared a national park - the first national park in Botswana.

There was a large settlement, based on the timber industry, at Serondela, some remains of which can still be seen today. This settlement was gradually moved out and the Chobe National Park was finally empty of human occupation in 1975. In 1980 and again in 1987, the boundaries were altered, increasing the park to its present size.

A major feature of Chobe National Park is its elephant population. First of all, the Chobe elephant comprise part of what is probably the largest surviving continuous elephant population. This population covers most of northern Botswana plus northwestern Zimbabwe. The Botswana's elephant population is currently estimated at around 120,000. This elephant population has built up steadily from a few thousand since the early 1900s and has escaped the massive illegal offtake that has decimated other populations in the 1970s and 1980s.

The Chobe elephant are migratory, making seasonal movements of up to 200 kilometres from the Chobe and Linyanti rivers, where they concentrate in the dry season, to the pans in the southeast of the park, to which they disperse in the rains. The elephants, in this area have the distinction of being the largest in body size of all living elephants though the ivory is brittle and you will not see many huge tuskers among these rangy monsters.

The Mighty Chobe River

The Chobe River runs along the northern border of Chobe National Park. It rises in the northern Angolan highlands, where it is called the Kwando (a Hambukushu name), and travels enormous distances through Kalahari sands before reaching Botswana; here it becomes the Linyanti (a Subiya name) until it reaches Ngoma where it becomes the Chobe.

Like the Okavango and Zambezi, the Chobe's course is affected by fault lines, which are extensions of East Africa's Great Rift Valley. These three mighty rivers carry more water than all other rivers in Southern Africa.

There is a close association between the Okavango, the Chobe and the Zambezi. The Okavango River is connected to the Chobe and Zambezi via the Selinda Spillway where high floods from the Okavango escape from the southern end of the Panhandle and flow into the Chobe. A current theory holds that millions of years ago the Okavango, Chobe and Upper Zambezi flowed as one huge river across the middle Kalahari, joined the Limpopo River and emptied into the Indian Ocean. Earth movements stopped this flow and caused a damming back of the river and the formation of the Linyanti Swamps.

The Chobe River first flows directly south, but at Diyei, the former capital of the Bayei people, it is caught by a rift, drops out onto a swamp and then turns north through Lake Liambezi, finally turning east and passing Kasane before joining the Zambezi at Kazungula. They flow briefly together before spilling over the deep cataract at Victoria Falls.

The Chobe twists and turns through swamps of wide reed and papyrus beds, forming hidden lagoons, which sometimes fill with water lilies. Its south bank alternates from open flood plains dotted with pans to thick woodlands. Across the river from Botswana lies the Caprivi Strip - and there the scene of grazing cattle contrasts sharply with the scenes of wild animals in the Chobe National Park.

ABOUT THE AREA
Kuzuko Lodge lies in a private concession to the north of the Addo Elephant National Park, with uninterrupted views of the Karoo Plains and the Zuurberg Mountains. The Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa and is in a malaria-free region.
Deep within the shadows of the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape lies the Addo Elephant National Park. Here, the evenings are punctuated by the strident howl of the black-backed jackal, and the call of the francolin heralds each new dawn. Safe from relentless persecution of elephants in the past, these grey leviathans of the bush now roam in peace. The original elephant section of the park was proclaimed in 1931, when only 11 elephants remained in the area. Today this finely tuned ecosystem is a sanctuary to over 450 elephants, Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo. There are plans to expand the 164 000 ha Addo National Elephant Park into a 360 000 ha mega-park.
In addition, plans include the proposed proclamation of a 120 000 ha (296 500 acre) marine reserve that includes islands that are home to the world's largest breeding populations of Cape gannets and second largest breeding population of African penguins.
The area is classified as semi-arid to arid, receiving an average rainfall of less than 445 mm per year. Rainfall is relatively evenly distributed throughout the year, but there are two peaks, in February-March and October-November. Frost occurs at times in winter. There is no natural water in this section of the park and all waterholes are fed by boreholes. There are a number of small pans in the area but these are dry except in years of exceptional rainfall.

The Pilanesberg Game reserve is home to many different species of animals including the Big 5. This is however not the only thing to see in this magnificent place and the views, the vegetation and the bird life are just as special and can be sometimes even better sightings than the elusive Big 5 travelers are always chasing.

The location of this park is excellent for any visitor to South Africa and locals alike and within a easy drive from the central hub of Gauteng and Johannesburg it cannot be excluded from any visit. What makes this park even more attractive is that it is located in a region with a lot of culture and visitors have to opportunity to experience Africa on a more grassroots level by visiting or just driving through one of the many small and rural villages in the region.

On Safari with the Sabah Family

During the World Cup in South Africa I met the Sabah family by accident, late one night after the Uruguay match in Rustenburg. I had no idea who they were when they arrived at my place and only found out days later. The guys, father and two sons have been traveling around the world for three year, more than 120,000km's, 6 continents and all this in a Citroen Mehari. Anyway, now after many meetings, conversations and braai's they are staying over at my place for some time and enjoying the pleasures of our beautiful country, South Africa. The last short break we took together was at the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. This was just a short visit, but was still a good enjoyable safari experience. Not to break the Sabah's tradition of camping we did the Pilanesberg in the same fashion and setup a camp site in the Bakgatla Camping Ground before embarking on our first Big 5 safari. I loaded a couple of pictures of this and will be adding more over the next couple of weeks. The safari was such a great experience that we are now trying to cover a new piece of track on every free weekend we can get...

Lathita is offering three adventure safari camps in South Africa and three safari camps in Botswana. All of the camps are in unique locations and at affordable rates. One of the focus points of the South African camps is to offer clients safari and adrenaline activities in the morning and football in the evening. Day 1 - 2: Kenya / Mara Fig Tree Camp

On arrival in Nairobi you will be met by your guide and transferred to Masai Mara Game Reserve where you will enjoy lunch after you check in at the Mara Fig Tree Camp. Fig Tree Camp is in the Masai Mara, Africa’s most famous game reserve. The Masai Mara is home of the “Big Five” and the magical spectacle of the wilderbeast migration. Day 3: Lake Nakura National Park / Flamingo Hill Camp

This morning you enjoy an early morning game drive in Masai Mara Game Reserve. After breakfast you guide will drive you to Lake Nakura National Park. Flamingo Hill Camp is situated within the famous Lake Nakuru National Park, which lies within the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. Nestled between the “honeymoon hills”, and set in beautifully landscaped grounds with natural foliage and a variety of indigenous African plants and flowers, Flamingo Hill Camp provides superb, tented accommodation. The tents are furnished with the understated luxury required by the modern traveler. Decorated in calming safari tones, natural woods, wrought iron and crisp cottons each tent has been meticulously planned to maximise comfort. Day 4: Amboseli / Satao Elerai Camp

You will enjoy an early morning game drive & breakfast before departing Flamingo Hill and making your way to Nairobi. You will enjoy lunch at the Carnivore Restaurant followed by an afternoon game drive to Amboseli. Satao Elerai Camp is located in a quiet, unspoilt, unique setting on a 5000 acre private conservation area at the foot of Africa’s Largest Mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro. The camp looks down onto the Amboseli National Park in one direction and up to Mt Kilimanjaro in the other direction, giving clients what is arguably the best location of any camp in Amboseli.The camp currently has 5 large luxurious lodge style rooms with large bathrooms equipped with a bath and shower with hot water provided by eco friendly solar units. The first lodge ever to be built in a Kenyan National Park, Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is superbly situated in the lee of Mount Kilimanjaro, encircled by volcanic splendour, adjacent to a teeming water hole and daily visited by vast herds of elephant, buffalo and plains game.
The lodge has 52 standard and 6 suites, styled to provide world-class luxury, whilst drawing on a quintessentially African aura, with ensuite bathrooms, running hot water supply, all amenities of a luxury hotel, and a private verandah overlooking the vast plains of Tsavo West.

Nestled amongst trees and surrounding a central water-hole, the semi-circular layout of the camp provides an excellent viewing point for each of their guests.
Satao Camp has 20 tents, all e-suite, thoughtfully positioned to ensure a full view of the camps "own" watering hole. The tents are exquisite; all are attractively furnished with locally made beds and unique African designs. Each spacious tent has a private bathroom with running water. The shower however is in the true African style, whereby the camp staff bring hot water in the evening. The bathrooms are very spacious, slate floors with stunning wooden framework, the wash basins sunken into the structure, all fitted with flushing toilet.
You would never believe you are in the African Bush. The chef's ensure quality food at all times.

Day 7: Departure

GABORONE THE CITY OF FUN

Living in Rustenburg (Sun City) has many advantages, Johannesburg and Pretoria is around the corner and the Botswana border is only 200km away. This weekend we opted for few days in Gaborone. Often described as Africa's fastest growing city, Botswana's capital Gaborone is a vibrant and colourful city, which lies in the flat valley between Kgale and Oodi hills, on the Notwane River in the south eastern corner of Botswana. The city is named after Kgosi (Chief) Gaborone who led the Batlokwa tribe into the area in the 1880s. Today Gaborone is a bustling modern city, and the seat of power for one of Africa's most successful economies. There are numerous busy shopping malls offering full a range of imported and locally produced goods, excellent restaurants, top international hotels, sports clubs and various night clubs. New buildings and suburbs sprout like mushrooms wherever there's a block of land to fit them, resulting in a mix of low-cost housing, blocks of flats, shopping centres and industrial complexes.
My husband lived in Botswana for several years and therefore going there is like a reunion with old friends every time. It seems like most expats knows each other and there is a strong feeling of camaraderie amongst them. On arrival in Gabs (the name the locals use) we booked into Mokolodi Backpackers, located, just a few kilometers out of town, close to the popular Mokolodi Game Reserve. It is a good Backpackers, but be sure to ask for a chalet when making the booking. The alternative wooden cabins are small and offer little in terms of space and creature comforts. The property offers rustic accommodation, friendly staff and a communal kitchen & bathroom as well as a BBQ facility.

Our first night in Gabs was great fun, we had dinner with a friend at the River Walk Mall, at one of the many franchise restaurants and went to a local drinking hole where all the expats hang out - Bull & Bush is a land mark in Gabs. Being an ex-resident, Johan met up with old friends and we shared many laughs and stories about “the good old days”. We left Bull & Bush only after 01h00 in the morning and had a good night’s rest at the Backpackers.

The next morning we slept in and by the time the sun was already high in the sky, we made our way back to town for a scrumptious brunch at Café Dijon at Kgale View Shopping Mall. We sat at a sunny table reading the local newspapers and chatting to acquaintances passing by. Gaborone is a relaxed place and the pace is much slower than back home, I was surprised as to how easy I managed to kick back a gear and get into the swing of things. Like the brunch…under normal circumstances we would go to a mall, eat and take off…at Café Dijon we enjoyed the feeling of knowing that we have nowhere to rush off to and nothing better to do – we sat there for 3 hours and it felt great.

In the afternoon we returned to Bull & Bush to watch the South African Currie Cup final. They had a big screen up and many people pitched in their team’s colors. My team did not win the game, but the pizza and beer at the Bull & Bush softened the blow. The rest of the afternoon/evening we played pool, enjoyed more beers and talked to friends. Gaborone has a mixed population and everywhere you go you hear different languages, Setswana, English, Italian, Chinese, Bulgarian and Afrikaans is commonly found.

On Sunday morning we had brunch at Equatorial, a vibe restaurant at the River Walk Mall. We were joined by a friend who manages Wicked Africa, an innovative alternative to backpacking. Wicked Africa has a fleet of combi’s which has been converted to include a bed and simple kitchen – the van rental is very affordable and you have the freedom to travel cross border and tour around Southern Africa at leisure. Wicked Africa and Botswana Safari Camps are currently working on an interesting venture, where people can rent the vans and then travel through South Africa to Botswana, visiting many interesting destinations, staying over at Chandelier Game Lodge, Garden Route Safari Camp, Mandela Bay Safari Club & Backpackers, Chobe Safari Camp and Mokolodi Safari Camp to name a few destinations. After the meeting I walked through the curio market at the Mall, admiring the local arts and crafts…and then we were off.

On our way to the Ramotswa border post we stopped at the Lion Park, which now boasts a theme park. The Theme Park was not yet open but it looks very good and I am sure that it will be very popular with visitors.

Arriving back in Rustenburg we were just in time for the 8 ‘c clock movie. It was a great weekend, which felt more like a mini-holiday.

Day 1: Moremi – The start of a Safari Adventure (D)
Your Guide will meet you at the Maun Airport from where you will depart for your Safari. Before departure you will have a last chance to do some shopping and sending e-mails. The drive is approximately two hours to the lodge and the first day will be spent relaxing at the Safari lodge. You will experience the first true sense of wilderness at night with all the night sounds and endless skies.

Day 2: Moremi – Kwai River Region and the Okavango Delta (B,L,D)
The day will start bright and early with a good breakfast and after packing the car with all you camera equipment you will be off for a full day of game viewing and excitement. This is big game country and you may encounter elephant, lion and leopard amongst many other species of wildlife. Lunch will take the form of a picnic under one of the age old trees in the bush. In the afternoon we will explore the channels of the Okavango Delta and experience the spectacular beauty and rich birdlife of the Delta. By late afternoon we will head back to the lodge for and relaxing evening, chatting about the sights of the day and watching the moon trod across the night sky.

Day 3: Moremi - Wilderness Experience of a different kind (B,L,D)
Today will be a different sort of wilderness experience. After breakfast we will head out on foot to explore the surrounding areas of the lodge and spot many of the not so well known aspects of the Moremi wilderness region. Lunch will be at the lodge and after lunch we will depart for another short game drive. This evening we will go on a night game drive for a chance to spot some of the very elusive nocturnal animals.

2 nights Deception Valley (Central Kalahari Game Reserve)

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is situated in the middle of Botswana and is one of the biggest game reserves on the African continent. This is home to many predators and chances are high to spot some of the big cats. Bird watching fans will also be in their element as there are many species of Bird of Prey. The region is relatively new on the safari circuits and not many visitors venture this way. The days are spent doing 4x4 game drives in a private concession bordering the Central Kalahari Game Reserve renowned for its Big Cat experiences, bird watching and a unique San (Bushman) Cultural experience.

Day 4: Deception Valley and the Central Kalahari (B,L,D)
We will depart soon after breakfast for our next destination, the Central Kalahari. On the way we will stop over in Maun for a bit of shopping and you will have the opportunity to catch up with your e-mail at one of the internet shops in town, or you could just relax. The drive is quite long and we will arrive at Haina Safari Lodge by late afternoon. At the lodge we will be welcomed by cold refreshments and friendly staff. You will have the option to go on a evening game drive or to just relax at the lodge for the rest of the day.

Day 5: Deception Valley a San (Bushman) Encounter (B,L,D)
This morning we will go out on an early morning Game drive, with brunch afterwards. The highlight for the day will be the afternoon activity – Bushman Interaction. The rest of the afternoon will be spent under the clear skies of the Kalahari and for the adventurous we will be doing a night game drive.

Accommodation is in Dome Tents (Camping) in a private concession bordering the Central Kalahari National Park.

2 nights Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pans are indescribably vast. These ancient salt lake pans, stretch as far as the eye can see and are bordered with grasslands hosting herds of wildlife. The Pans, especially Soa Pans, serves as breeding grounds to millions of flamingo’s each year and you may have a chance to experience this spectacle (Seasonal and Weather Permitting). The Safari Camp is approximately 15km from Kubu Island where you will visit the Historical Ruins which was recently been declared as a world heritage site.

Day 6: The Makgadikgadi Pans (B,L,D)
The Makgadikgadi Region is vast and driving to our Safari camp is quite far. We will depart after breakfast and make our way to this magnificent and beautiful place. Along the way we will stop for a picnic lunch and some photo shoots if we see something interesting. The road can be very difficult to navigate during the wet season so we will make our way to camp as quickly as possible. The accommodation is completely different from what you would have experienced so far and we will sleep over in a Safari Camp with dome tents and a communal ablution facility. You will be amazed by the open space in this region and we will have sundowners on the edge of the expanses of Sowa Pans. Night time is truly an amazing experience and if the skies are clear this is one of the best places to visit for stargazing.

Day 7: The Makgadikgadi - Explore Kubu Island (B,L,D)
After breakfast we will do some exploring and take a drive to the historical site of Kubu Island. This area was recently declared a world heritage site and you can view the ruins of an age old trading post. There are also many photo opportunities at Kubu Island and of the many stunted Baobab trees of the site. Along the way we will have a chance to visit one of the cattle posts of the region and to interact with the locals. Lunch will be picnic style, before we visit the pans and explore the local nature on foot. Your guide will prepare a BBQ this evening as you sit mesmerized at the vastness of the skies and the pans.

Accommodation are in Dome Tents (Camping) on the Makgadikgadi Pans or near the edge of the pan.

2 nights Chobe Game Reserve

One of the highlights in Chobe is the river or boat based game viewing where you get the chance to get up close to the wildlife. Chobe offers some spectacular photo opportunities and game viewing second to none.

Day 8: Chobe, Home of the Elephant (B,L,D)
Today will be a long drive again as we depart for Chobe soon after breakfast. Along the way we will stop over at the crop fields of Pandamatenga for a picnic lunch before we head on to Chobe. On arrival we will check in at the lodge, freshen up and depart for the village of Kasane for some shopping and the internet.

Day 9: Chobe by Boat and 4x4 (B,L,D)
Today will be game viewing, but with a twist. After breakfast we will head for the waters of the mighty Chobe River and will spend the morning doing game viewing by boat. This is an experience of a lifetime because with the boat we have the chance to get really close to the animals. After the game viewing excitement we will head back to camp for lunch before we depart on another 4x4 game drive in the Chobe Reserve. The Chobe Reserve is home to more than 70 000 African Elephant and we may encounter big herds with more than 100 elephants at a time; a truly magnificent site. This is our last evening together so we will do a special farewell dinner. We will use this occasion to give people the opportunity to talk about their highlights of the safari and to exchange addresses and digital pictures.

Accommodation is in a the Dome Tents (Camping) on a private concession bordering the Chobe Forest Reserve.

Lathita is launching a fresh new range of products in Botswana, which includes camps in new uncharted areas and 4x4 Safaris. Our main aim is to give the average traveler the opportunity to experience the best of what Botswana has to offer. We are also including activities not usually included in the standard of the shelf packages like; hiking, sleep outs under the stars and serviced fly camping. The 4x4 safari range will for a start run a route between Maun and Vic Falls and will include excursions into the Central Kalahari or Deception Valley region and the majestic Makgadikgadi Pans. Future plans are to include the Northern Plains within the Chobe Forest reserve and a final stopover on the banks of the Chobe River near Kasane.

All accommodation is serviced and in permanent Tented Camps or Safari Lodges. At selected destinations we will use the local guide services and activities to enhance our client’s experiences. The safari routes include all activities, meals, park fees and some refreshments. All the safaris are accompanied by a professional and knowledgeable driver guide. These are series tours and departures will be weekly and on request. Lathita Expeditions’ specialty is to tailor make tours and although we will offer this as a series tour our clients will still have the option to make adjustments should this be needed. The tours will be small groups, up to six persons, but are essentially done for private groups of minimum 2 persons. Single persons will pay an extra fee of 50% the normal rate.

We have been noticing that advertised Safaris to Botswana has become very expensive for most people and we would like to introduce a new Safari options system. With this new system you can choose you budget and then we will package the safari to fit within your budget and while you will still be able to visit all the best Wilderness regions on your Safari to Botswana.

The biggest price variation for Safaris to Botswana is the type and style of accommodation used and closely following this is the season of travel. Botswana Safaris can be as much as double the low season rate when you travel in the peak safari season. To travel in the low or shoulder season on your Safari to Botswana does not necessarily mean that you will get a worse overall experience and although it may be a little hot and some regions may not be accessible, there are still just as many good wilderness areas where you an enjoy just as good a safari as in the peak season.

DAY 1 – KURUMAN, South Africa
This is where your journey begins….start off your 14 day adventure in Kuruman. Kuruman is the main town in the Kalahari region and is known as the “Oasis of the Kalahari”. Water, mountains and dense vegetation - this is how this beautiful green town, situated in the Kuruman Valley is described. If you have time, go and see “the eye” in Kuruman. It has been said that if you drink the water from “the eye” you will not want to leave Kuruman. This is unadvisable as an amazing adventure lies ahead.

DAY 2 & 3 – KGALAGADI, South Africa
This morning you will head north towards the red sand of the Kalahari for the next 2 days.Experience the isolation of this desolate region – there is very few inhabitants of this desert like place, except for springbok and gemsbok that is abundant. The Kgalagadi comprises an area of 3,6 million hectares which is one of very few conservation areas of this magnitude left in the world. This area is renowned for its beautiful sunsets be sure to take a few pictures of this phenomenon, where the sky looks as if it is on fire from the sun.

DAY 4 – FISH RIVER CANYON, Namibia
After breakfast head towards Namibia and another amazing site: The Fish River Canyon. Following border procedures at Ariamsvlei Border Post you will be well on your way to Fish River Canyon. This canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and is sure to take your breath away. As you stand on the edge of this topographic wonder, you feel a sense of insignificance in relation to the forces of nature, as glaciers, water, extreme temperature and wind eroded the canyon over millions of years. The best time to enjoy the splendour of this canyon is at sunrise or sunset.

DAY 5 – LUDERITZ, Namibia
Following a last glimpse over the Canyon you will depart towards the town of Luderitz. This quaint German town has interesting stories. Many charming and fine buildings reveal its colonial history as the first German settlement in South West Africa. DAY 6 & 7 – NAMIB NAUKLUFT PARK, Namibia
Another adventure and amazing sights await you today as you travel to Namib Naukluft Park. Namib Naukluft Park is the largest game park in Africa (40 000 sq. km) and fourth largest in the world, as well as being the most unsual. There are 4 sections in the park: Sossusvlei and Sesriem, Naukluft, Namib section and Sandwich Harbour. Landscapes range from an impressive mountainmassif to desert plains and high dunes, from deep gorges to an estuarine lagoon.

DAY 8 – SWAKOPMUND, Namibia
The route to Swakopmund is amazing with yellow-shaded sand dunes on one side and the blue Atlantic Ocean on the other. Namibia’s Premier Holiday Resort! Swakopmund has many palmed streets, tropical flower gardens with green lawns and the picturesque old German style buildings make a walking trip around the town a must! There’s plenty to see and do in and around Swakopmund….a visit is well worth you while!

DAY 9 – BRANDBERG, Namibia
This morning you will drive to the Brandberg in Damaraland. Brandberg is famous for its bushman rock engravings – the “White Lady” being the most famous. Damaraland is one of the most interesting and dramatic regions in the country and is well known for its awkward looking plants and trees that look like they have been imported from outer space. The Brandberg is the highest mountain in Namibia and is sure to be on of the highlights of your stay.

DAY 10 & 11 – ETOSHA, Namibia
After breakfast you will drive to Etosha National Park. Etosha is a beautiful National Park with plenty of animals and easy game viewing. Depending on the season, animals will roam the open plains or cluster around watering holes, where you will see herds of zebra, impala, springbok, elephants and lions. Be sure to go to Etosha Pan, where you can park at the pan edge to view the vastness of this moon-like landscape.

DAY 12 – WATERBERG, Namibia
After an early breakfast you will take to the road and travel to Otjiwarongo and then swerve east towards the Waterberg Plateau. Situated in the north-central Namibia, the Waterberg Plateau Area is a fascinating region of remarkable geological formations and ancient dinosaur footprints! This area is famous for the several fossilised animal tracks that have been preserved there for more than 200 million years. The largest footprint - that of a large dinosaur measures as much as 25 metres in length.

DAY 13 – GOBABIS, Namibia
After breakfast this morning make your way to Gobabis – centre of the Omaheke region in Namibia. Gobabis is situated 200 kilometres east of Windhoek and is in the heart of the cattle farming area. It is considered to be the capital of the east and is also known as the “Little Texas” of Namibia. Gobabis borders the Kalahari Desert, and is traditionally in the land of the Herero people. The borderpost Buitepos lies 110 kilometres east of Gobabis.

DAY 14 – RETURN TO JOHANNESBURG

THE ENVIRONMENT AT BUFFALO HILLS

The vegetation at Buffalo Hills is a mixture of fynbos, Knysna (or Afro-montane) Forest and rehabilitated farmland. Our aim is to preserve the mosaic of forests, fynbos and grassland under our care by returning the land to its natural state. When Jack and Lucy Mudd first bought the first portion of the Farm Stofpad - which later became Buffalo Hills - some of the low-lying land was cultivated with citrus trees, feed and cash crops and much of the riverine area was choked with invader plants (particularly black wattle - Acacia mearnsii). They immediately set about clearing the land, removing the invaders and restoring everything to its original state. Fortunately the majority of the ground was undisturbed and, with the removal of the farm fences and the subsequent incorporation of neighbouring farmland - most of which was also undisturbed - Buffalo Hills was turned into a viable eco-system. A re-stocking programme has returned the buffalo, rhino and various types of antelope to the Garden Route - and the results have been satisfying indeed. More importantly, though, the results have contributed significantly to Buffalo Hills’ stated aim of preserving a wild part of Africa for our children - and their children.

Mokala is SANParks newest park, situated approximately 80km south-southwest of Kimberley west of the N12 freeway to Cape Town. Nestled in the hills, the landscape boasts a variety of koppieveld (hills) and large open plains. The little hills are the centre of the park and the isolated dolerite hills give the place a calming feeling of seclusion. A big surprise waits when you passing the hills and then confronted by the large open sandy plains towards the north and west of the Park. Drainage lines from the hills form little tributaries that run into the plains and drain into the Riet River.

The name Mokala is Setswana for a Camel Thorn (Kameeldoring). These trees occur in dry woodland and arid stony or sandy areas. This is one of the major tree species of the desert regions of Southern Africa. This immensely important species has a great range over the Northern Cape. It varies from a small, spiny shrub barely 2m high to a tree up to 16m tall with a wide, spreading crown.
The Camel Thorn is an incredible resource to both wildlife and humans who survive in often harsh conditions. Traditionally, the gum and bark have been used by local tribes to treat coughs, colds and nosebleeds. Some even use the roasted seeds as a coffee substitute.

Silaka Nature Reserve - Malaria Free Eastern Cape

The primary purpose of the Silaka Nature Reserve is the conservation of the biodiversity of a near pristine example of the Eastern Cape Coastal Forest.
This reserve lies in a forested valley only 6km south of the laid-back town of Port St Johns. This small but beautiful coastal reserve stretches from Second Beach to Sugarloaf Rock, covering approximately 400-ha, offering the nature tourist accommodation in a beautiful natural setting.
The crossing river called Silaka River, from which the reserves name is derived, flows inside the reserve and forms an estuary, which enters the charming main beach for our guests to enjoy.
On the southern part of the beach a large rock can be found, called Bird Rock. This small but exquisite reserve caters for lovers of tidal pools and otters, plus exceptional bird watching.
The Climate
Silaka has a moderate, humid and sub-tropical coastal climate. Summer temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C and winter temperatures from 8°C to 21°C. Frost does not typically occur in the area, and humidity in the summer months can be high.
The rainfall is high with most of the rain occurring during October and November.

Self Catering Bungalows
There are 14 self catering thatched family bungalows at Silaka Nature Reserve. Each bungalow has two double bedrooms, a spacious living area and a fully fitted kitchen that is fully serviced. The bungalows can accommodate 4 persons each.
The bunglaows are situated on three terraces, overlooking the sea. Bungalows 11 to 14, on the third terrace, are closest to the beach. One need only walk about five hundred meters to reach the beach and a fishing spot.
